I am thinking about trying to be a wedding planner. I am working on my degree in marketing/public relations. I also have a minor in legals studies. What is the average rate that a wedding planner charges and how do you go about actually becoming one?

I also have looked into the Event/Wedding Coordinating field.

After talking to some planners, they suggest packages that range from $500 and upwards. Each package includes only certain things and certain time frames (like week of wedding/day of wedding etc). Or if they want you to do everything then you can charge hourly (although very hard because you have to meticulously keep track of what you did when and where) or charge a certain percentage of what the total wedding cost is-- most charge 10-15% and if you're very well known you may even get away with up to 20%.

I'd start at 10% myself with some packages offered as well. Do that until your name gets out there and you build a clientele list.

Another suggestion would be to work at a local event planning/wedding planning agency and see how they function, learn the ropes.

Remember! You can always do more when you have the right training, both on paper and real life. Look into getting your bridal planning certification!

Hope this helped!

There are online schools you attend. I was looking into becoming a wedding planner myself. They make about 10% of the total wedding starting out and go all the way up to 20%! If you do the math: a $20K wedding your taking home 2K starting out! And 20K is average so most are WAY more then that!

The classes range from $400-$1000. But if you think about it- its to get your degree practically (well a cert). So its $1000 to get a CERT compared to $20-30K for a degree. Its an awesome deal in the long run.

Most people start out as a part time planner to get their name out there and get a business going. But once you have a steady stream of clients, you can do very well for yourself!

Anymore q's feel free to contact me! Ive listed some schools websites that I was looking into.

I'm not entirely sure. I know they are expensive. I myself am looking into having my own wedding planning business. not so much a wedding planner actually, I like decorating and making the accesories like the cake server and knife sets, glasses, centerpieces, favors, etc etc etc.

If you're a wedding planner in San Jose / San Francisco Bay Area, my best friend is looking for a wedding planner to partner with. She's a photographer for shoot me now studio in San Jose. They want to promote you via video marketing in and around the Bay Area. This video will show up on first page of Google. No charge to you. They will pay for it in exchange that you refer them your clients.

Just Google "Shoot Me Now Studio" in San Jose. You can contact them anyway you want. Ask for Annabeth.

Regards,
Zoe P.
