I'm on a budget so I just can't afford a super premium brand, but I'd like to get my cat the best brand I can afford.

Well if you are on a budget you could make the food yourself. Chicken and rice is a good thing to feed your cat. You could get a free range chicken and some organic rice and cook it up use some chicken juice to make a gravy and your cat shouldn't have any problem eating it. You could also go to your local fish guy and ask him for the bone of the fish after he fillets the fish, he shouldn't charge you too much if anything. But if you want to feed your cat dry food there are a bunch of good brands that are between 10-15 dollars that are all natural and REALLY good for your cat. the brands are California Natural, Serengetti, Wellness. but those are just a few, I really recommend the all natural brands because they are so much better for your cat and will save you lots of money in the long run when it comes to the Vet and the health of your cat. But if you can't afford those things and you don't want to make your own food, any wet food is better than crap dry food. because 3/4 of a can of wet food is water and usually has less carbos (which are REALLY bad for your cat because they can't metabolism them)...So i would only feed them food like friskies, whiskers, or things like that for as little time as you have to, but i would try some of the options before, you will have a much happier and healthier cat if you spend a little time preparing it. FYI make sure if you cook the chicken you feed your cat that you take the bones out, if your cat will eat raw chicken you can leave the bones in, it is REALLY god for their teeth! Hope this is helpful!

After working in a pet store for some ten years and comparing brand after brand of foods I have come to this conclusion. If you're going to feed a "grocery store" or "chain store" bought food .... stick to the Purina foods. Now that IAMS is no longer a high quality food it is also sold at local grocery and chain stores. It's OK but it is not as high a quality as it started out being.

Try a food. If your cat does well on it and is healthy ..... that's a good food for your cat. Check with your vet if you can. Just a phone call to a vet may do the trick there.

The best brand is the one your cat does well on. I have four cats and what one thrives on, the other does not. Buy the best quality you can afford and if your cat is doing well and is healthy, stick with that.

Personally I prefer Royal Canin, Nutrience or Science Diet. For two cats I use Iam's hairball, as they have chronic diarrhea and this is the only thing that stops it, I don't personally like Iams but these two do well on it and that's what matters.

You can buy a really high quality dry cat food and supplement it with a medium range wet canned food so your cat gets the best of everything. For example, if you buy Castor and Pollux dry cat food "Natural Ultramix" ($9.00 a bag could last up to a month for one cat) and give 1/2 can of Friskies or Whiskas (30 cents a can) every day to ensure cat's hydration needs, your kitty will be happy, healthy and lively. I think any budget can accomadate this regimen.

Check the store brand and name brands at the store. Look at the label.

The lower the ash content, the better.

And if your cat is a neutered male, don't give him too much fish.

I don't know if this helps or not, but we feed our cats Purina hairball formula (the hard food). It's relatively inexpensive and our little ones seem to like it (plus it's cut down on hairballs tremendously)
