This is more common than you might imagine.
I knew a number of people that suffered some form of performance anxiety, especially in pole vault.
I mean, when you look at it, hurling yourself in the air on a stick is an unnatural activity.
First, you are just beginning, so don't beat yourself up, or put too much pressure on. Focus on proper technique, even after you blow a jump.
Second, confide in some friends or teammates. Tell them you are having issues when people watch. Have them watch, make funny noises, snide remarks, whatever. Work on overcoming the distraction by honing your concentration. Kind of like pumping in crowd noise and learning to deal with it.
Last, develop a routine. Like a basketball player at the freethrow line, develop a repeatable rhythm and stick to it -- again focusing on the fundamentals.
In time, you will overcome the anxiety. It's totally normal. Good luck!

Everyone gets nervous before their event! It shows that you care about what you are doing if you are nervous. When you are about to pole vault, you will forget about all the people watching because you will be so focused on getting over the bar. All you have to do is just focus. Just relax and focus, and have a little fun too! Good luck!

My first year I would get so nervous before every race, I must've looked like some little pansy ready to get my butt kicked. Now I jus tdo it! If you just tell yourself everyone else is just as nervous as you if not more than you don't feel as "lost and hopeless". Now I walk out there as composed as ever and I know it helps because I've got the whole confidence and intimidation factor going on. Just Do It!
