God is like all other ideas and inventions in the minds of mankind. If it fixes one problem, it creates another. For a long time, God fixed the problem of existence for a lot of people by giving it structure and purpose but the concept created so many other problems (intolerance, holy wars, denial of the value of life) I don't think we can characterize the creation of God as a total mistake but the mistake is in continuing to rely on the idea now.

Since God is perfect, he couldn't make a mistake. However, that doesn't make your second statement true either. One would have to believe there has been a mistake made. The only mistake being made is the lack of faith. Therefore, both of your statements would be false.
