My cat's right hind leg is swollen and he won't put any weight on it. There is no obvious deformity and he doesn't seem to be in any pain. It done this once before and after a few hours, the swelling went down and he was ok. Anyone have any idea what this could be? I will be taking him to the vet in the AM, was just curious if anyone else had this experience before.

It could be a abcess. This is caused by your cat being bitten by another cat or animal. The skin over the wound heals quickly, so the infection cannot drain, that is what causes the swelling. If this is the case, your vet will have to perform surgery on your cat and place drain tubes in the hind leg to allow drainage. I went through this last fall with my cat and he recovered fine.

The most likely thing that happened is that he has been bitten or stung by a bug or bee. He may also have twisted his leg and caused a sprain, and he is favoring it until it is healed.

You are very smart to be taking him to the vet, just in case he ends up having a severe allergic reaction.

Cats are very strong little creatures and can rebound back from a lot, but it is always a good idea to have your vet check for additional problems.

Something bit him. My cat's front paw and half way up the leg got swollen after being stung by a bee. I had her outside and was watching her when she quickly swatted a bee before I could do anything about. She shook her paw and started licking it. It swelled up fast and got warm. The vet told me to just watch her breathing. It went down over night.

Or it could be arthritis that flared up.

It looks like there must be some pain involved, or he would put pressure on it to walk. Not knowing Kitties age, possible arthritis? Could be more serious. Looks like your doing the right thing and letting the pros's handle it. Good luck.
