I brought my pup to get groomed for the first time and when I picked him up, they said that he was so scared it took 2 of them to hold him down! Just wonderful !! Now he is scared for life and i have to anesthetize him just to get his hair trimmmed. (Its the scissors to the face that scare him). I don't want to spend $100 dollars every 2 months and i hate to think of what putting him to sleep that often will do to him in the long run. I live in the New Orleans area and would love any contacts for patient, knowledgable dog groomers or any other suggestions you may have! Thank you kindly!

Hi
I'm thinking if i had hair like a Shih Tzu I'd hate getting groomed too ... There are ways to make it easier , try turning it into a game and reward him ..
As for medication , talk to a vet , there are pills that can be takin to relax him you can give it to him about an hour before you go .. I have to do this with my dog to get his nails clipped and even still it takes all I have to hold him down ... ( G Shepard 90 pounds )
Depending on where you live im sure the medication goes by several names ... another thing you can try is to pick up some travel sickness pills at your local drug store .. for a small dog like your's I wouldn't give him more than 1/2 a tablet .. it will make him drowsy .. but the best bet is to talk to your vet ...
You could try showing him at home that he needs not be afraid of scissors by having him see that they won't hurt him .. if all else fails read one of Cesar Millan's books ( Dog Whisperer ) this man is amazing and you could gain great knolledge from his experience ..good luck

You could try another groomer....BUT,
you said that this was his first time and you didnt mention
how old this 'pup' was for his first time being groomed.

I'm VERY curious to know how old he was!

Ask your vet, and lots of people you know who they use as a groomer and explain the problem to the groomer - dont let it be a surprise. You may be able to find a groomer that can work him through this. But it will need to be one with alot of experience and knowledge of dealing with dogs like this.

Check around and next time you get a puppy start it out with a groomer EARLY. The sooner the better!
Dont let people tell you to wait until after he has finished all of his puppy shots...thats a big mistake.

People dont wait until their child has had ALL of their
childhood shots before taking them to daycare or out in public around other kids...

rather of sending your domestic dog to a groomer, why no longer discover ways to do him your self? could you touch your domestic dog's breeder and get some classes. the full grooming technique is an staggering bonding adventure between an proprietor and a canines - one the canines could love. it is totally unacceptable to your domestic dog to could be anesthetized to be groomed!

Definitely try another groomer.

I *occasionally* get a puppy that goes nuts when you try to groom him, but with patience and firmness they usually learn to put up with it. It may take several visits.

If you have the opportunity to watch the show "The Dog Whisperer" please do. He has had shows on corrrecting this behavior.

The gentleman's name is Cesar Milan. You may be able to google the show of Cesar and they may have a forum you can check out.

The show is on cable, and I highly recommend it to any dog owner.

Learn to trim him yourself....that's a possibility....otherwise, he's just going to be shaggy. Don't take him back to the groomer if it terrifies him...maybe have the vet do it....
