There seems to be no good answer to this. Most believers say the "sons of God" are angels, and that these angels came down from heaven and had sex with women. But Christian Identity adherents say the "sons of God" were Adamic white men who were seduced by pre-Adamic non-white women. This race mixing event was what caused God to send the flood of Noah.

There are two serious interpretations.
One is that there were people who were of the line of Seth, and who worshipped God, while others were of the line of Cain, who were perhaps limited to a strictly humanistic view.
So the first, sons of God, began to get interested in women from the second group, the daughters of men. The result was a dilution of the faith.
It mentions there were "giants" on the earth at the time. It doesn't say the giants were a consequence of these unions.
The second interpretation is that fallen angels would have got interested in human women, and that the result was a production of gigantic men. I strongly doubt that this is the correct interpretation. Angels, whether good or bad, do not have sexual interest acocrding to Jesus.

This is a debatable subject, as you can look at it from a couple of viewpoints.
As some have already mentioned, these "sons of God" may indeed be fallen angels who procreated with women.
Another point of view is that these "sons of God" are in fact, descendants of Seth, and married the daughters descended from Cain.
No one really knows for sure, and it's one of those things that has little to do with the essentials of the historic Christian faith.
As Paul says, "...Each one must be fully convinced in his own mind." (Romans 14:5c)

The "sons of God" in this passage refers to human men living on the earth at that time. The "daughters of men" are human women living on the earth at that time. Basically, this passage says that men saw women to be beautiful, so the men married whichever women they chose as their wife. That's all this passage means. There is no big, deep theological understanding to come from these two verses. Keep reading and maybe there is some deep theological observation to be made in the verses following. Keep reading and God bless you!

The sons of God are fallen angels. The daughters of men are mortal women. Their offspring are the Nephilim.
The full story is told in the ancient non-canonical books of Enoch and Jubilees.

To ask the question only displays the ability to not just think but to reason with and thus the answer will be revealed, only that answer may not fit into your conception or reasoning, and by your own will to seek such an idealistic answer, do you risk completely missing the message, as is apparent by the wording of your question, therefore the answers offered you, would not suffice to you. Your misguided approach would discard the efforts of my work. Rethink that what you seek to learn by that what you ask and you will no longer have the need too.

There is much debate on this within TheTrue Christian Faith... if any one tells you they know for certain thay are decieving or are deceived... fallen angels would be one guess... or just men, who have always lorded it over women... that is a subject that will remain for those who make it to Heaven to learn in further instruction there.
