do you believe in the saying "it is better to have loved and lost than to have never have loved at all"? I'm asking because I'm going through a very painful breakup with someone that I really loved and it makes me think that if we never got together in the first place than I wouldn't have the very painful feelings that I have right now. The really good thing that has come out of it is that I've learned so much that I'll be able to take with me into my next relationship, but I still feel that if we never got together then I wouldn't have all of these painful feelings. Any comments??

Well, I just went through a painful breakup myself. I gotta tell ya, I'm thinking that the old adage is a bunch of baloney. I wonder if the person who coined that saying has ever tried it. Right now, I just feel like I wasted a year and a half on a phony person. Maybe I'll feel differently later on.

Love has different definitions at different times in our lives, but at all times it is an important need we want to be filled. Yes, I do believe that it is "better to have loved and lost than to have never have loved at all". No one can tell you exactly how to get through heartbreak, you just have to take it one day at a time and then one day you'll look up and without realizing it, moved on to something and someone more precious than you had previously. Hindsight is better than foresight I know, but this I have learned from experience. The one I thought I was truly "the one" when I was 20 wasn't at all the one I was truly meant to be with. (This is different for everyone) but now when I look at that first love, I see a nice person but not a person that I would want to be married to. Keep your head up and take it one day at a time - find something to keep you busy (job, school, etc) and this too shall pass.

going through a bad relationship will only make you stronger.
don't dwell on it, but learn from it. Just don't make the same mistakes in the future.

P.S. we've all been there
