I have been wearing glasses for 3 years now, and I have gotten used to them. But, many problems have been occuring with them, like they have breaking alot these days because I don't very good care of them, and I look bad with glasses on. So, I want to go to contacts, but I am a little scared. I play sports, so glasses are a little problem with that too. But anyways, I am scared that if a basketball or soccerball or something hits my face, then the contacts will shatter in my eyes and I will be blind. I also fear that I might accidentally go to sleep woth the contacts on and that might cause problems,. and also I heard that people who wear contacts get irratation in the eyes and get pink eye and all these diseases. I want to wear contacts, but I need a little comfort. Can anyone tell me if my fears might really happen?

all that you mention are remotely possible, but very unlikely. If you listen to what your eye doctor tells you, you will be fine with contacts.

Ok first of all, as far as I know most contacts are soft and rubbery. This being said, if something were to hit you in the eye the contact would not shatter or blind you. The most it would do is go to the corner of your eye or fold up and fall out (this has happened to me). Contact lens complications involving infections and diseases only affect a very small percent of contact wearers. This can easily be avoided by proper care and cleaning of the lens. You will want to make sure that you don't switch the left contact with the right contact because if you have pink eye in your left eye you will spread it to your right eye. By the way I don't believe contacts cause pink eye. I have accidentally fallen asleep with my contacts and they were blurry and hard to take out of my eye the next morning, probably because they were dry. I just put them in the contact solution for a while and they were back to normal. Contacts are a great choice for getting rid of those glasses and they are generally easy to live with once you get used to them.

Dont like Contacts, Have your eyes lasered
Lasik is relatively a very safe procedure which has been performed for nearly a decade. The technology has advanced so much that its now possible to predict the outcome even before laser is done. The pre op Diagnostic Procedures are called as orbscan and abberometry.

Lasik procedure takes just 10 mins for both the eyes and you can resume normal activities within 24 hrs.

The only disadvantage is the cost of the procedure , but this can be over come when u have the procedure done in countries like India which have very good laser centers and Ophthalmologists.

Eye care tourism is becoming very popular and u can save a lot of money.

I am an Ophthalmologist specialising in eye care tourism in Chennai India.

I've been wearing contacts, for a year now. I'm 15, and I was as worried as you about getting contacts, except I was scared they wouldn't go in my eyes. They won't fall out or break. Glasses have more of a chance of breaking. If you clean your contacts and take them out everyday like your doctor tells you, you won't get an infection. As for going to sleep with them on, you'll just have to add it to your daily routine to take them off before bed or when you get home. I've almost (notice the almost) gone to sleep a few times with them on, but always catch myself, and you probably will too. You'll probably know there's something in the bathroom that you forgot to do, and then go there, see the contacts, and remember. Even if you do fall asleep, its not the end of the world. My doctor said all that will happen is your eyes will feel dry. You will need to re-hydrate them with drops.
Some things I've learned: Don't wear torn lenses!
Don't panic! When I first started wearing them, I dropped them a few times, and panicked because I couldn't find them. By the time I found them, they were dry. In my effort to make them good again, I tore them!
Keep putting eyedrops every 4-5 hours
Cut your nails! Its easier to put them on and take them off

I've been wearing soft contact lenses for 10 years and have no complaints whatsoever. They take a little getting used to, but they're pretty darned comfortable once you do (and it only takes a day or two). You don't have to worry about soft contacts shattering in your eyes, but if you have to get the rigid gas permeable lenses you should talk to your optometrist about the dangers -- I would imagine they would pop out of your eyes before they would shatter since they're quite durable. You don't want to go to sleep with contacts in, but by the end of the day when your eyes start getting tired the contacts start feeling uncomfortable, so you always have a reminder to take them out. And no, I haven't had more incidents of pink eye since I started wearing contacts either. The clarity of vision that I get from contacts is amazing after wearing glasses for years. So my advice to you is to get soft contacts if you can and don't worry about it -- you'll be fine.

ok so, at first i was a little scared when putting contacts in, but i've gotten used to it so it's all good now. so if you get hit in the face with a ball or something like that then the contacts won't shatter in your eyes especially if you get soft contacts it will probablly just scrunch up in your eye. you can get irritation and such in your eyes with contacts but you can also get it with glasses you might just notice it a little bit more when you are wearing contacts. i hope this helps good luck!

contacts are really hitech these days. they are soft, so getting hit in the face probably wouldn't hurt them. some you can wear while you sleep so that's not a problem. talk to your eye doctor. if you keep your hands clean when you put them in or take them out, you reduce the possibility of infection. follow the care instructions and you'll have little or no problem.
