Most Pentecostals practice this, and for the most part it is legitimately the Holy Spirit coming upon someone in power. The person is so overwhelmed that they simply are taken down, which is called being "slain in the Spirit." However, sometimes when this happens, it is a menagerie of different things:
1. The church or the pastor or the individual looking for attention
2. Mass hysertia
3. The pastor has actually pushed the person, making it actually an issue of abuse
I have experienced this almost unexplainable phenomenon, and have witnessed to all 4 options: someone is looking for attention, it's mass hysteria, abuse has occured (which I have had happen to me before), or it has been legitimately the Holy Spirit coming down on someone. Most of the time, it is the last option, but there have been reported cases of each of the other three options taking place, so it is really the discretion of the individual for the most part. Only the person who had it happen to them really knows which one it was. Good question though, as there is much concern in this area within the Evangelical stream of Protestant Christianity.

1) Being impacted by the Holy Spirit at a high-power level. Too powerful for the human body, so it collapses. It does remove some human pride to submit. The encounter allows God to reveal things to each individuals' spirit and soul. Eg emotional healing, removing the need for years of therapy. Sometimes physical healing. Sometimes revelations with regard to their life. Its best done in a friendly environment, when there is time to 'soak' in God's presence.
In the Old Testament it was called the Shekinah glory or chabod. It is truly awesome.
2) Faking it. Because no one likes to look like a worldly christian who can't receive.

When the Evangelical person smuckes you on the head, he causes a concussion and causes you to pass out.

Probably a number of things.
1) Overexcitement. Effects of adrenaline.
2) Poor ventilation in the sanctuary.
3) It's expected as a sign that one has been "overcome by the spirit." Hysteria.

The pastor works the crowd slowly an it builds up. Ever notice they pass the collection plate when it reaches a high? They will never admit to almost inducing a trance. Watch with an open mind. I am not in a position to judge only God knows.

Hello QuothThe… :)
Some call it being slain in the Spirit..
This happens when we go to the Lord in Total Submission..The Power of the Lord overtakes us and we bathe and bask in "His Glory filled with His Love"..when most of us wake, we feel drunk in the Spirit..
You feel cleansed and refreshed..with Unspeakable Joy within.. :)
In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ.. :)

I get a sense you really want to know so I will tell you, it is truly the Holy Spirit coming into them because of their prayers and laying them out so their spirit can hear Gods words as our mortal ears cannot
