To be "obliged" is to be "humbled" or to be "honored" by someone. In an example: My seat is here for you to sit on, Miss. Thank you, much "obliged".

To be "obligated" is to do something against your will or something you do not want to do. In an example: My father is a Pastor in the state of Georgia & most of the times he "obligates" me to go, even though sometimes I don't really wanna go. I hope this helps you, Regina!

Obligated is a purely American word. I understand it to mean "under an obligation".

Obliged is English and has two meanings. One is "grateful" and the other means "under a moral or legal duty", depending on the context. In a legal document being obliged to do something would indicate that one has undertaken to do it or must do it under the provisions of law. If one simply feels obliged to do something, one is under moral pressure to do it.
When one says "I am very obliged to you" it means that one is deeply grateful for whatever it is.

much,preety much same! at first, there were a french influence of verb "obliger" of which came up obliged.
then old english obligate gave obligated, where people wish to use this old english version.-

obliged means you are willing to do something, obligated means you feel you are required to do something for whatever reason.

obligated implies there is a requirement defined by law or contract, obliged implies it is a moral or social requirement
