Recently, United States stamps were worth 37 cents for a first class letter. Now however, they were raised to 39 cents. All mail carriers accept 37 cent stamps with a 2 cent stamp added (totalling 39 cents). Usually, for a letter or other small piece of mail (post card, greeting card, etc.) one stamp will get the job done.

A first class stamp, is worth approxiamatly .39 cents.
It can be used to mail a 1oz letter to anywhere in the USA.
Here is an example of a first class stamp: http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2006/US/01/08/postagerate.hike.ap/storyvert.stamp.ap.jpg

If the stamp says .39 on it, it has the same value of a first class stamp. Example: http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20070314/capt.wx10403141835.longfellow_stamp_wx104.jpg

If you are mailing a 1oz letter around the world, it should be .84 cents.

Note: After May 12, 2007, you will need to pay .41 for a first class stamp.

If you still are unsure, go to a postal office and ask the clerk for help.

In the U.S., a first class stamp is 39 cents.
The Postal Service has requested an increase - to 41 cents or 42 cents. I am not sure when that will go into effect.

a us stamp is currently 39 cents. however, i believe each international address has its own separate cost. For example, germany is different than Zambia, due to the German and Zambian postal costs.
