My master's advice is to do walking meditation first before the sitting meditation.
As for the sitting meditation,we always do the metta meditation first, followed by anapanasati/vipassana.
The purpose of the metta meditation is to calm the mind and to be at peace with all beings in the meditation area.
Hope this helps.
Metta to all.

There are 3 ways of gaining meritorious deeds (kusal) taught by Buddha. They are Danna (almsgiving), Sila (Moral conduct according to Buddhism) and Bavana (meditation)

Buddha says: The most powerful way of gaining meritorious deeds (Kusal) is by doing Loving-kindness Meditation. It goes way above the meritorious gaining power of Danna and Sila.

I'd say the best thing is to do what works for you, per your needs, unless your lama tells you a particular way to do things.

Loving-kindness meditation usually calms my anger issues.

Soto Zen. It's about not letting your mind run off with your thoughts. No "focal point"
