Pick up a wicker basket she can later on use or laundry. Begin buying things such as shampoo, soap, bottles, nipples, diapers, gripe water, children's tylenol, outfits, receiving blankets, stuffed animals and books etc. This is what I did for my neice.
I will be doing this again for someone else now, my grand daugther's auntie. When you go to the shower you can decorate it with bows. I began collecting items for about 5 months ahead of time.

I know you wanted idea of things that you made. But if you decided to buy something, here is what I reccomend......
These are the things that I could not live with out (well, my baby could not):
#1 The Fisher Price Aquarium. She has loved it since the day she went into the crib (at 5 weeks) and she still loves it to this day and she will be 1 next month. The music is soft and beatiful. The lights are SO soothing, and for the really bad nights, the fish "swim" and it provides a wonderful distraction druing fussy nights or teething.
#2 A wipe warmer. Something I never wanted. Until my baby spit up down the front of my t-shirt and I stuch a wipe into my shirt......WOW are those things cold. I bought one that night. BUT it has to be a Top Warmer (Dex makes one)........the other ones require pillows or they dry otu the wipes. The dex one I have is great. Just dump 1/2 cup water in with every wipe refill and it works wonderfully.
#3 a Baby Einstein DVD. My daughter loves Mozart. She could be in a horrid screaming fit (she has GERD, so it happens often) and I play that DVD and she just stares. It calms her down like nothing else. The combination of images and music are so relaxing. She won't fall asleep when it is on (she likes watching it too much) but it is great for some quiet time.
These are just my personal favorites. Things that I would buy for anyone that I needed a gift for, because they are my top picks!
Good luck!!!

Blankets, dont think of it. Have a million and use like 2 of them. I just use ones that are bought, more practical I think.
Unless you want to make one of those, no-sew blankets. I really appreciated that because it was thick. Good for picnic or going to someone's house to keep on the floor for a clean place for baby to play that's also a little cushy. You can get all kinds of those kits or just pick out some fleecy fabrics and tie them together. If you never saw them, here is one from ebay (go to www.ebay.com and type in 260098187969 - but you can get them at Joann's.)
If you want to make something you can always go and get a frame and embellish it for mom & baby with glitter or buttons, or whatever.

Can you sew? If so, a blanket would be a really good idea. Also, put together a basket of baby goodies for them. (butt paste, baby powder, bath time wash w/ lavender scent, just all things you know they will go through quickly. Those are the best things you can give them. Don't forget to get some bath stuff for mom too.

In the mall in my home town there is a store called, Things Remembered. There may be a web site you could go to but I am not sure. They have all kinds of things that you can have personalized- blankets, picture frames, all kinds of crystal figurines. Just about anything you would want. They even have the baby booties covered in gold or silver.

Something I think is really nice and wish I had more of are the fleece tied blankets....they are pretty easy to make, but a little on the steep side for new parents to buy. My kids love them and I have two blankets less then I do children..they fight over them all the time!

If you can sew, walmart and most other stores sale blanket patterns, all you need to do is go to the fabric department pick out a style have them cut it and get your stuffing, sew it together and there you go. If you can cross stitch and have the time to do it there are also a multitude of cross stich patterns at Wal Mart and other craft and department stores. Good Luck.

if you can knit or crochet - scratch mitts and little hats are great! My friends mom did that for me....If you want to give something that they will use all the time and appreciate give alot of diapers and wipes with a little figurine. A neighbour did that for me and I am still using the diapers plus it has saved me trips to the store and alot of money.
