All women get split ends. It even has a fancy name: trichoptlosis. Split ends can be the bane of every woman’s life! They happen to your hair when the cuticle which protects your hair has been removed from the very end of your hair.
Split ends develop in dry, brittle hair. The cause of damage most often is due to overly aggressive drying or over brushing with the wrong type of hair brush.
The hair cuticle cannot be replaced once it is damaged or removed. It cannot be replaired. Most often the hair splits and forms two or three strands. These strands can be several inches in length. The only way to deal with hair that is split, is to cut off the damaged section.
The main way to deal with split ends is not to go to a salon every other week for a hair cut.
The hair trim tips below are for women who are just going to deal with the split ends. If you want a new hair style, don’t do this at home. New hair styles are for the Professionals!
To remove split ends:
Start with tiny pieces of hair. Gently twist them carefully in a downward motion.
If you have split ends, they will begin to stick out.
Use sharp scissors and cut no more than ¼ inch at a time. Cut into and not right across. Remove thickness including the damaged cuticles to provide a natural effect. This will result in a layered look.
It is important to cut the same amount evenly in each twist.
Remember to go slow…and do this with a friend for her support, judgment, and to have another set of eyes. Have fun!

Technically it's both.Hair split ends happen when the hair is exposed to extreme temperatures or it does not have enough oil and has a lack of moisturizers and nourishment. To avoid this you should Avoid brushing your hair when it is wet and most vulnerable to split or break. Stop using hair dryers, curling irons, crimpers, hot curlers, and straightening irons.
Use regular conditioner in your hair after shampooing, and a deep conditioner once a month.

kinda both actually, split ends are dry, the ends of your hair is the oldest part of your hair it is the dryest and weakest. therefpre it splits. split ends damage your hair if you dont cut them away. i had split ends really bad, and i wouldnt cut them, so eventually they kept splitting further and further up my hair. my hair was completely damaged, and usinga flat iron didnt help. my hair was thin, brittle, dry and everything. about a year ago, i got my hair cut short, and i have been keeping my ends more mosturized and keeping them cut every 8 - 10 weeks. now my hair is beautiful, its healthy, and everything, my hair has grown alot nd i have been able to keep the length. my hair has grown about 6 in the past year and i have been able to keep 4 inches of it, instead of my hair splitting and breaking off. not to mention i am black our hair is harder to manage.
all i can say is keep those ends trimmed or you will regret not doing it

It could be both. You might want to try trimming i but if that doesn't work, there are some shampoos and treatments to prevent split ends and strengthen hair.

It means that your hair is damaged - you should get your hair trimmed (which may be up to a few inches depending on how much damage there is). Then use a deep conditioner twice a week to keep your hair healthy.

Your hair needs trimming and firming...apply some hair oil / baby oil at the edges of your hair for a couple of weeks, you can see the difference.
