The Roman Catholic Church does indeed possess massive wealth. The major reasons for this are its age and its multi-national presence. Catholicism has not historically observed separation of church and state with the result that through the centuries the Vatican has obtained vast holdings in real estate that has, of course, increased in value through time. Expensive buildings have been erected on this property and many treasures have been stored there. As a consequence of its vast holdings, the Vatican has become involved in a variety of business enterprises, including manufacturing, banking, and insurance. The Vatican also has many billions of dollars invested in stock markets around the world. The tax exemptions the Church enjoys around the world and the offerings it receives from the faithful also help to insure its continuing prosperity.
