When i try to draw and paint, lets say a figure, lanschape or anything that has to do with relaying what my eyes see, im hopeless. I just dont feel comfortable and end up giving up I have tried many times, but come to the same conclusion, i hate doing it! Yet give me paints, brushes and a canvas, and no specifics in mind, i am in seventh heaven and have often made some really good peices of work. Mind you i didnt really think they where good, but others thought they where really very good. Everyone says i am very talented. But i am hardly ever satisfied with the end result, eventhough i really do have a great time doing it!

here's my take, art for most is a very personal thing that come's from inside that individual. That's what makes it art.Do what you feel, what you like. I do reverse painting on glass i have been doing it a very long time. I create a variety of paintings from realism to abstract to impressionism. I just paint what i feel. The other thing to keep in mind is you're art is for you're pleasure before anything else.I see so many people today going to art school coming out and they loose their creativity lost in the shoulds and should nots. Yes i think there are basics to know but i believe art is not something that needs to be taught. I have learned sometimes what you think is a disaster is the way the piece wanted to be. i once finished a piece for a show it was drying on my easel when my daughter knocked it off , well it broke. I was crushed because this piece took me a mo. to finish. I couldn't throw it out while the pieces laid on my drafting table i liked the way they looked piled up so i took them and attached them inside another window, took it to the show with me and it was the first one i sold at that show. So i say do what you like not what others think you should be doing.

That's perfectly fine. Some people prefer still life's, some people prefer free style. To be honest, your free style work is most likely more powerful than any still life could be. Realism, in most cases, is obsolete. why paint something if you can take a picture of it?
If you love doing it, then paint and draw all you can. Don't' worry about realism. Do what makes you the most happy. If you're not having a great time doing your work, then it's going to turn out like ****. If you're having a great time doing it, it's going to shine through the work! So keep it up!

I'm never satisfied with my work... and I'm going to be doing this for the rest of my life. Real artists are never satisfied with the end product. We can always do better. It is that thought that keeps the artist going. Knowing that we can do something different, keeps us moving. If I thought everything I did was great, I would never get better.

So, the most important thing I have to say to you is, If you love doing something, then don't stop. You'll regret stopping for the rest of your life. Do what you love!
Don't worry about realism. Just because you aren't the greatest at it, does not mean you are a bad artist. Not all artists do realism or representational art anymore.

Paint, Pix. Reason being that drawing intimidates me. The rigidity and precision which drawing entails is ABOVE ALL ELSE, taking the essential from the subject ONLY. One has to have an extremely disciplined eye, and stay true not not depend on the extraneous to be used as camouflage, or clever filler. Look at the drawings of Holbein the Younger and you'll see a perfect example of what exactly "drawing is"! With paintings one may be able to fool the viewer a little being that the medium allows more to work with.

sounds as though you are a true artist. No artist ever really has an opinion of 'wow that is totally excellent' about their own work. Rather annoying really. But its all part ot an artists make-up.

Some people just dont like doing drawings of what is actually there. And it is not really a modern artists perogative. Its all about the journey you have that gets you to your final piece. Perhaps you are painting subconcious thoughts? Expressing your feelings, without realising? (Look into surrealism) Or maybe you just like abstract art and experimenting with the quality of materials.

Maybe you should consider doing an art and design course, it changes you, but art is emotionally destroying at times!! Hence never liking your work.

Keep it up though, sounds like you have great potential.

First of all, there are very few artists who are satisfied with their work. Second, I enjoy all types of art but there are some people who hate to draw what is in front of them but they love painting from their own imagination. Some people are the opposite way. In the end, you should only do the type of art that you like or there really is no point in doing it. Don't do anything that you don't like.

Be aware that many people like to toss around compliments even if they don't mean it. You're probably not fond of stilllifes or landscapes, hardly anyone is. I imagine your paintings to be of the colorful modern style. In the end, its just personal preference, theres not problem and no explanation.

From what you say, you seem to prefer to paint from memory or imagination.
So, don't worry about it. This is what makes you feel good and this is what you should do.
When you stop feeling good entirely about your art, that's when you should worry.

The day you are satisfied is the day to stop. You will no longer have a target to attain.
