Mange is a skin parasite that can cause animals to be terribly miserable and in extreme cases, is can be deadly. Mange seems to target specific dog breeds, like the Shar Pei, Afghan Hounds, Pit Bulls, Chiuahuas, Dobies, Boston Terriers and Dalmations, to name a few. But not just dogs can get it, either. It is not normally super contagious, but mothers can pass mange to their young. And quarantining an animal that has mange is ALWAYS recommended. If you suspect your animal has it, take him to your vet. There is medication and if it's caught early enough, it is very treatable.

mange is a mite infestation, of microscopic animals that eat skin,

the first one is demodectic mange, a stress related condition. most dogs have these mites on their body all the time, thier immune system keeps them in check, but when some dogs have lowered immune systems,or severe stress (such as being in a shelter, or having puppies, malnutrition, or severe abuse) the mites take advantage and cause mange by multiplying out of control and causeing the skin to become weak and the hair to fall out

the other type of mange is contagous, and its related to scabies in people, these are different mites that are spread by casual contact and eat the skin and weaken it, causing hair loss

the treatement for both is ivermectin, nutritional supplements and neutereing helps for the genetic one, because hormone fluctuation stresses the dog and gives the mites a chance to surge

Their are two forms of Mange one is contagious to dogs and people and one is not. Red mange is not contagious to anyone else. They are either born with the hereditary one called red mange or they catch it from another dog who has the other kind called Sarcoptic Mange this one is also contagious to humans, when we get it it's Scabies.

OMG please ignore any old school guys telling you to put motor oil on them! This is very detrimental to the dogs skin and its future, motor oil contains PCB's which are cancer causing agents. Go to a vet, they can help you treat your dogs mange the humane way.
