Why is it that if my cat is walking towards me and i call him by name, he just sits down and stares at me, whereas if i don't call him he will come right up to me? He does this to my husband too and we can't work out why

It is not crazy. It is walking to go do something and then you call it making its attention go towards you. It stops because it wants to know what you want. It was doing something and you stopped it when you call the cat. The cat is not crazy.

Dogs come when called -- cats will get back to you later.

I look at my cat and do a slow blink and the cat does it back to me. Probably some kind of cat greeting. Try calling the cat by name and offering a treat. Kitty has to take this from your hand or he doesn't get any. It's easy to teach them to beg for treats. Undignified, but they don't care as long as they get a treat.

Cats find being looked at directly quite threatening. If you are looking at him when you call him this could be why. Staring at a cat is how you assert dominance over them.

cats like all animals don't listen to the words that you say but the sound that you make or your tone of voice if your tone is even and calm your cat should come to you, but if you sound excited or aggressive the cat will be alarmed by you and be over cautious instead of a cats usually curious nature.

It is called "being a cat". That is just what cats do. You call them and they just look at you like you are crazy. Kind of like teenagers.

It is very possible your cat in the proccess of training you. They do things like that you know. Why should they walk to you, when they can train you to come over and pick them up! Its simple math. LOL

Its just cat behaviour in general i think, cats only come for a cuddle on their terms- when they want it. They are very indepenant little creatures, but very lovable!

Try calling him so he sits down, and then keep calling him and see if he comes, if he does he may not be crazy, but if he still doesn't come, then he is cuckoo
