All Orthodox Christians give up the same thing for Lent. We give up all animal products (meat, eggs, milk products etc), all fried foods and all alcohol except on designated days. We are allowed to eat shellfish, however, and occasionally get to have fish on special feast days. We have four "Lents" per year, and we observe the same rules every Wednesday and every Friday during non Lenten times. It allows us to exercise discipline, and also makes us more aware that all our food comes from God. In addition, observing Lent by giving up certain food lets us be aware of how many other wonderful things God provides for us to eat that we might not usually eat. All this goes back to the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve were given anything they wanted to eat except for the fruit of one tree. During Lent, we try to do better than they did. Sometimes it's difficult.

I didn't give up anything this year because for me, it's turned into an exercise of willpower and not something that helps me spiritually. (It used to though - I got rid of a couple of habits this way and feel like I'm better for the experience.)
This year I chose to make sure I spent time each and every day in prayer. I'm not alway good about that, so I figured Lent would be a good time to get back in the habit, so to speak.

All alcohol except Communion wine.
So far, so good. St. Patrick's day was tough as I had to pass on a party - - but that was more because it was Saturday night than anything else. I get up awfully early on Sundays.

Heroin. It's going pretty good so far. About as easy as not killing random children - that's what I gave up last year.
