hi there,
the law regarding firearms,
First of all there are 2 types of licence, a shotgun certificate which allows you to purchase and obtaine a shot gun as well as amunition secondly a firearms wich allows the same but with rifles.
When applying for ether of these certificates the procedure is to contact your local constabulary and ask for the appropriate paperwork.
Once recived take your time filling it in and read the guidlines, What will help you when applying is if your a member of a club which reflects the typ of shooting you wish to do, ie clay, game sindicate (shotgun) target, stalking, estate (rifle) or even writen permision from a land owner stating you have the sporting right over thire land. Its alway best if you have some knowledge and experience of the gun you intend to use as well .
Shotguns/rifles most be kept in a police approved cabinet which is fixed to a main wall within the home, preferabley out of sight. Shotgun amunition should be kept out of sight though not locked up, rifle shells most be kept behind lock and key and not with the rifle its self.
When buying a shotgun/rifle entrys most be made on the buyers and the sellers certificate then the chife constable most be informed of the transfer within 7 days.
With a firearms cert you most have the rifles/modarators you wish to accuier endorsed on your cert befor you may perchase them, ie you may only buy whats agreed on your certificate with your constabulare,,, you may add a firearms at anytime buy going trough the right procedures.
Note a modarator or silencer is classed as a firearm and also most be endorsed on your cert ie if you wish to use a modarator on your rifle it most be stated on your cert , for ever rifle that you wish to use a modarator on it most be stated and endorsed.
As hunting is my sport i find it in my best intrest to know the law regarding firearms inside out.
If you wish for anymore advice then please e mail me.
You could also check your local constabulary website as well as the home office website.

All firearms require a firearm certificate which can be obtained from the police if you can show good cause for having it. That can be membership of a club, but it can also be written permission to shoot on land or it may be that you are a farmer. Farmers are required by law to control vermin on their land. For shotguns you need a shotgun certificate.
Shotguns are OK
Bolt and lever action rifles are OK
Semi-auto 22LR is OK
No pistols, other than air pistols, of any type in any caliber, not even 22 rimfires.
No semi auto full bore (center fire) rifles
In the US you need to be a legal permanent resident. So if you have your green card you can buy anything anyone else can buy. They used to be OK with non-resident aliens (don't get your panties in a bunch Americans, that means someone who is here legally for 4-8 years) but after 9-11 then became a bit more difficult about that. The only difference in California is that whereas a US citizen neads a drivers license and a handgun safety certificate, at worst, I also have to provide three consecutive and current utility bills to prove I am a resident, apparently a ten year old drivers license doesn't do that adequately but they'll believe AT&T instead of California DMV.
(below: the wait in CA is 10 days and I don't think any state has the right to ask why you want whatever it is, I certainly don't have a reason for most of what I own and almost never use. For the record, I bought my Lee Enfield because my dad used to have one when he was in the RAF Regiment, I shoot it when I feel nostalgic.)

Where?
In the Uk you have to register with your area Police HQ which should have a firearms dept. You need to be a member of a rifle and pistol club ( yes, you can still shoot pistol, albeit muzzle loading sixguns) for at least six months as a probationer and then apply for a certificate. To get a certificate, you need to be of good character and you will be obliged to have both your photograph and your application form signed by a notary who has known you for at least two years and can vouch for your sanity and your character. Plus,
If you are a farmer or 'stalker', you have to provide proof that the land you shoot on is comparable to the type of rifle you will be shooting.
Also, that the weapons bought have to be kept in a secure and hidden metal safe, carry a kite mark for the purpose and WILL be inspected by the police.
To obtain a firearm certificate YOU have to prove why you require that weapon.
To obtain a shotgun certificate, the police have to prove why you should'nt own that shotgun.
In the USA you just walk into a gunshop and order your semi automatic pistol (for whatever purpose...normally 'self defence') and wait three days. If the police have not objected, you go back to the gunshop and get your gun and as much ammo as you want.

I'm assuming you live in the US, and are a UK citizen. If this is the case, you can own a firearm. In order to get one, you must go through a background check, and you must prove you're a legal US resident, you must present the last 3 month worth of any utility bills(at least this is true for the state of Pennsylvania)
Depending on what state you live, the background check could last from 10 minutes to 5 days.
