YES YOU CAN... but you don't need a receiver... you need an amplifier.
This amplifier can be a combination radio "receiver" cassette player, CD player. I have an old old old CD playing stereo that will not play CD-R or CD-RW (copies of CDs).
But I hooked up a newer DVD player that will no longer play DVD's (cheap piece of junk, 39 euros). It plays all kinds of CDs and wma.

Make your DVD player hooked up to the "Auxiliary input" jacks. Usually found in the back of the amplifier/stereo. Then turn on the master stereo system... select "AUXiliary", adjust the volume (it may be way toooo loud).
The DVD player will play your CD through the speakers of your old stereo. All volume, treble, bass is controlled by your stereo.

Yes yes yes you can do it...good luck.
