The supposed direct decendants of Muhammad were attempting to regain power. There were about 73 of them against a force of more than 1000. The 73 lost. But it is held up as an example for their beliefs and morals.

However Yazid who killed Imam Hussain (alaih salam) was a Sunni and he wanted to become a Caliph.
Imam Hussain's (alaih salam) death is widely interpreted by Shiats as a symbol of the struggle against injustice, tyranny, and oppression. Shiats believe the Battle of Karbala was between the forces of good and evil. Imam Hussain (alaih salam) represented good while Yazid represented evil.

The Ummayad Caliph Yazid treacherously ambushed and killed Hussein, whom Shiites regarded as the rightful Caliph. The whole thing originally started as a dispute over succession to the Caliphate, and that incident was the last straw.
