I'm left-handed & have always enjoyed sewing little to medium projects by hand. My mom taught me the basics when I was a child, but I never really wanted to learn to sew on the sewing machine (that looked too much like work to me; sewing by hand is very relaxing). I don't do big jobs often, but I can easily sew simple projects, curtains, pillowcases & assorted simple alterations & mending for my family. Try Googling some sewing websites...you should find all the info you need to start. IMO being left-handed hasn't presented any problems at all. You can save SO much money if you do your own sewing. I have a friend who makes all her own clothes! They come out terrific. She uses a machin & patterns, however. Good luck!

Absolutely.
Granted Im left~handed but Im anidextrious & use my right hand to sew. Still afraid of the sewing machine since I havent used 1 in 24 yrs.
& Yes it can be cheaper to do the Curtains/Drapes Urself.
I took some fabric samples w/ of my furniture & stuff & found fabric at WalMart for a $1 a yd. Most WalMart's have $1 & $2 Shelves of fabric. & Thread that matches $2 a spool.
When it was all said & done, I spent $6 on 6 yds of Fabric, $2 on Thread & had some1 sew them for me ($10 a panel). Then I had to buy Curtain Rods ($15 a piece).
So overall, it costs me $58 to do 2 very tall Windows. (80"+)
If I had bought the curtains/drapes in the length & widths I needed & everything else, it would have costed me $100 to do these same 2 windows.

I am left handed, and I don't think it matters. If you have problems with right handed scissors get a left handed pair. The rest of the tools are not right or left dominate. You can get a used sewing machine if you don't want to spend a bunch of money.

I don't see any reason why a lefty can't sew as well as a righty. Go for it. I love to sew. And yes, you can save a lot of money. Just use your imagination and you will love what you come up with. Happy sewing.......Dixiebell

Sewing machines are inherently made for left handers. All the critical tasks are on the left, so left handers have an ADVANTAGE. This was because, originally, the right hand powered the hand crank which is no longer present on modern machines.

If you put your mind to it, you can do anything. My ex-wife was a lefty as well and she did it all including sewing. If you are not confident, then take a course or find someone who can mentor you in the art of sewing. Good luck and enjoy.

I am left handed, and there are several things I do right-handed. I am of the opinion that if it is a new skill that I don't already know, and the teacher is right handed that I can learn that just as easily as left handed.

Why not? It will help if you buy left-handed scizzors, but from there everything should work fine. My sister is left-handed and she's a great sew-er. Just work from right to left whenever possible.

We lefties are good at anything we put our minds to! We're also quite creative. It's always a great idea to make your own curtians if you can (whether left- OR right-handed) because those babies are expensive! Plus, you can make them in any color, style, length or width you choose. Have fun decorating!
