You need to read the whole story in Exodus in it's context. It was the rebellious nature and the hardening of the heart of the Egyptian leader/god Pharaoh that caused the punishment and death of his own citizens children. That Pharaoh would not allow slaves to go free to worship their own God.

I don't trust what the Israelis say about there relationship with God and i don't think God gets into killing people at all
