The first TWO ingredients should be meat (that will be about 60% of a dry food) and canned is mostly meat. The AAFCO "minimum" is 30% protein and it does not specify where the protein comes from - corn has protein too.

The meat source must NEVER be by-product meat which by law has to be treated with chemicals (some known carcinogen) and labeled "unfit for human consumption".

Some dry foods that meet those criteria are: Natural Balance, Eagle Pack, Blue, Solid Gold, CA Natural, Felidae, Nature's Logic, By Nature Organic, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul.

For canned foods: Natural Balance, Blue, Lick Your Chops, Avoderm, Wellness, Feliae, By Nature's Organic are good choices.

You can go to www.petfooddirect.com and pull up any of those foods, click on "details" and read their ingredients lists and get an idea of the price range.

I have two cats ones four and the other is just a kitten, and I feed them dry food all day and wet food in the morning, for wet food I would suggest Purina Friskies in either sliced or loaf, you can buy it in a pack of twelve in either Wal Mart or Target such drugstores as that. The sliced box is red and the loaf box is light blue I believe, now these boxes run about 8-12 dollars depending where you are, but you will go though one can in about 3-4 days, so it works out being cheaper to buy it in bulk. The dry food I would suggest Purina Cat Chow (green bag for indoor cats) if the cat is over one year old, but if its still a kitten then I would suggest the Purina Kitten Chow (yellow bag), this has most of the nutrients from the mother's milk. As the cat gets older to get them off of the Kitten Chow, mix the Kitten and Cat Chow together for about 1-2 months, then just get them going on the Cat Chow. Good Luck with your new cat! Any more questions feel free to contact me.

Meat, should be the fist ingredient in all pet foods, corn is a filler Brewers Rice is bad and Wheat Glut on should stay away from though its a source of protein it is the cause for the current recall.

Good Cat Brands: Wellness all around good though a little bland.

In nova-Excellent for Urinary Track has Cranberries

Good Luck but don't worry, just stay away from supermarket pet food shop at specialty stores where image is important!

It is true that Friskie's is not on the list but i had a six year old cat that ate only Friskie's wet food, and she died a little over a week ago and she had all the symptoms of kindey faliure.I thought maybe at first she was just sick until I heard about this.My cat died on Sunday and we heard about it Friday. so although it is not on the list I wouldn't advise anyone to feed their cat this .I've contacted Purina and they are supposed to be checking into it.

I only give my cats 2 tsps of canned cat food a day and it happens to be Friskies. They are on Hill's Science Diet for crunchies and i didn't see that on the list. You can get a 17 lb bag for around 19 dollars. Science Diet also has canned food for about 50 cents a can and I have found Pet Smart to always have the best prices over other pet stores.

High quality wet and dry cat food brands NOT in the list include:

1. Natural Balance (what I exchanged my stock of Eukenuba and Iams for just yesterday - available in Petco and specialty shops)
2. Wellness (available only in small specialty stores)
3. Innova (available only in small specialty stores)
4. Nature's Recipe (available in Petco and some specialty stores)
5. Castor and Pollux (available in Petco and some specalty stores)
6. Royal Canin (available in Petco and specialty stores)
7. Wysong (only in some specialty stores)

Mid-range good quality can and dry cat food:
1. The Purina line of products (fancy feast, friskies, Purina One)
2. Whiskas line of products

To make absolutely certain at this juncture, pick a cat food that does NOT have "wheat gluten" as one of its ingredients since that is the ingredient presently under suspicion in the present pet food recall.

Who told you to get 29% protein? Is that dry or wet percentage? I am just surprised becuase most cat nutritionists recommend 50% protein and no fillers (corn, wheat, etc.)

Good foods: Innova Evo, Wellness, Felidae, Artemis Fresh Mix, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Fromm, Verus, Timberwolf Organics, Solid Gold. Merrick and Evangers are good, but they come in canned only.

Okay foods: Blue Buffalo Spa Selects, Nature's Variety Prairie, Nature's Recipe, Eagle, Pinnacle, Avoderm, Royal Canin.

BAD foods: Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, Friskies, Whiskas, Meow Mix, Pro Plan, Science Diet, anything you buy from Petsmart or a grocery store. People buy these foods because they advertise well, but they don't know what's really in them: moldy grain, euthanized pet animals rendered down to animal fat or animal meal, beaks, feet, and hooves rendered as animal meal, corn, which is bad for animals, salt, dye, sugar, cancerous tissue from animals unfit for human consumption, restaurant grease (like, from deep fryers) to improve taste, and so much more awful stuff. Don't listen to all the people endorsing these brands, they are BAD for your pet and will guarantee a shorter lifespan.

Corn should not be present in any form. It's a useless, undigestible filler used by cheap companies to cut costs. Wheat is also a bad thing. Barley and oatmeal are good grains.

You can find most of these foods at natural pet stores - it shouldn't be hard to find one in your area- or you can order online if you prefer and have it shipped to you. For that, try www.petfooddirect.com. Their prices are pretty fair. Good luck!

This isn't under 20$ it's about 20$ but my gramas cat ate this food and lived to be 22 years old in cat years which is past 100 years old in human years! It's called Science Diet, great stuff! All different varieties! I have my cat eat this and it's worth the money, she's real healthy! So try it out! And it's not bad, we've been getting it for years, so don't listen to the people who say it is bad! Remember, gramas cat lived to be 22!

The link below is the very best canned foods you can buy.

I don't advocate dry food at all, but if any of those companies make dry foods as well, they're likely to be good too.

I do know that Wellness makes dry foods, and theirs is pretty good.

EDIT: PetSmart - I buy Natural Balance cat food at PetCo, but I stopped in at PetSmart to see what they offered. I noticed that they didn't have even ONE single good brand of cat food! I might shop there for toys, but that's it.

I just thought it was funny that someone else mentioned it.

I feed a combo/rotation of Natural Balance, Felidae, and Wellness. Anything you can buy in Walmart or a grocery store is garbage, anything with corn is garbage, and anything with by-products is garbage.

I recommend you read the book "Food Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food." By Ann N. Martin.
