Just looking for advice, hot spots, and networking information! I have a music education degree and am a trained classical singer.

If you have a local orchestra or an orchestra nearby, you should call and ask the Music Director if he would be willing to listen to you sing. Prepare a piece of oratortio (you probably have one) and start getting gigs with orchestras this way. Conductors have a lot of contacts and if they like you well enough, can short cut a few of the steps. It also boosts your resume. Have you considered auditioning for the Mets Young Artists Program? They audition singers such as yourself ever year (up until age 31?) You'd be coached by the best, I know several people who have done that. You could also try other Young Artist Programs (that's how I did it). You get a lot of exposure and a ton of contacts and they are looking for people who are already trained with degrees for the most part. Best to you. It's hellish at times but worth it.

Most opera companies hold open auditions for chorus members (some are AGMA only so if you're against joining make sure you research the companies.) The young artist programs are also great. Most companies have them. Just audition, audition, audition.

Some large companies are:

The Met (NY)
San Fransico Opera (CA)
Los Angeles Opera (CA)
Glimmerglass Opera (Forget where this one is)
Washington National Opera (DC)
Opera North (NH)

All offering young artist programs

It's really a combination of talent and being in the right place at the right time

Good Luck!

Opera's always going to be hot in Los Angeles, that's just the way it is haha you should really go to school and be seriously trained if you want to even think of about getting into opera. USC has an amazing Opera department. NYU of course has an amazing department as well, from what I've heard

The Opera world is a very tight small world, and you need information form people who are in it, not some clueless outsiders from Yahoo Answers. I am sorry to say this but if you need to ask people from Yahoo Answers, you are really far from it to begin with. Don't waste your time on a website like this, go to the professional opera websites!!

The most obvious answer is to go to college for it. Choose a school of music that is particularly well known for the art of your choice. Living in North Carolina (US), for instance there are several really good schools of music, but for choosing opera I'd probably most strongly consider UNCG (University of North Carolina, Greensboro). UNCG has a wonderful voice major.

Depends on your age. Depends on your level. You don't just 'break' into the business; it's the result of years of training and education.
