My mama is 48 (I'm 20) and she's in horrible shape. I truly worry about her and her health. My boyfriend is even concerned! When she and daddy got married she was tiny weighing in at 110 lbs. After my birth a year later, she let herself go and instead of getting rid of the baby fat, she just gained more weight. Ten years later she had my brother which didn't help. When I was 15 she had gotten down to a healthy weight and looked incredible. She even had a glow about her. I don't know what happened but she soon let herself go again. I'd always been concerned but it wasn't until she had a mini-stroke last year that I became DEEPLY concerned. She's constantly telling me how proud she is of me because I quit smoking at the beginning of the year (she's been smoking since age 14) and I've begun working out and eating healthier (she has adds a ton of salt to everything). When I tell her to work out with me and quit smoking herself, she tells me she's too old. How do I get her to get in shape?

She now weighs almost 200 lbs. and diabetes has attacked almost every woman in the family. She also says one of the reasons she doesn't work out is because of arthritis. I too have arthritis because I broke my wrist back when I was 12. I tell her it's no excuse and there's a such thing as Alieve (sp). HELP!

One answer just reminded me: yes, she's depressed because her relationship with my daddy hasn't exactly "blossomed" over the years.

I also can't exactly "control" what she eats. I no longer live at home.

The only way I can get her to lose weight is to force her! If I don't, she'll have a heart attack by the time she's 50.

pray about it, and tell her diabetes kills, first it can make a person go blind or lose their feet, call your local hospital and ask around where is a class on diabetes, she would meet new friends who are in the same situation, she has low self esteem.. sounds like she might be pre-diabetic.

Don't let her know you are exercising with her, just go over to her house after dinner and say "wow, it's beautiful night, let's go for a walk". After a couple of weeks of doing this regularly she should be feeling better and may look forward to it, and you can grow from there. It really sounds as if your mom is suffering from depression (this causes people to feel negatively about themselves and not have any energy to do anything and lots of other things). When you are on one of your walks talk it over with her and see how she sees herself and her life (if she is very dull or negative - talk to her family doctor and see if you can get her in for a check up). Depression is very common and so easily treatable. And don't let her take her cigarettes on your walks. And praise her whenever you can. Tell her that you can't wait until you have kids because you look forward to seeing her be a "grandma" or "mom mom" or whatever. Good luck and God Bless.

Honey! You can't make your mother do anything that she doesn't want to do. What your mother needs is motivation. Encourage her to join "Weight watchers". My wife joined and I went along with her. The have a tremendous program and they don't promote dieting. rather they promote eating the right foods. Then again you can't make her join but you can plead with her and tell her that you are concerned about her health. Loosing weight is like quiting any habit - you have to be self motivated to do it. So the best you can do is to encourage her but please don't nag her.
