While browsing Yahoo answers, I noticed that many people gave the answer "42" to the answer "What is the meaning of life?" What does this mean? Is it a reference to a movie or something?

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

However, it is not posited to be the meaning of life. It is posited to be the Answer to the Great Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. In the five books of the trilogy (the only five book trilogy in existence...), the great question is never revealed. The closest the author ever comes is from a faulty output which reads, "What do you get if you multiply six by nine?"

Its from a book (or series of four books, more precisely, but you can get them all in one book), the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams.

A super-computer comes up with the number 42 as the answer to the meaning of life.

Hitchhikers Guide. They spend thousands of years waiting for The Answer, and this is what the super computer comes up with.

Adams was a hysterical writer!!

Incidentally, it's also why Mulder lives in apartment 42 on the x-files... a shot-out to Doug Adams.

An idea from Douglas Adams that has spawned a radio play, a series of books, a weird 80's TV series, and 2 mediocre movies.

A must read series of 4 short quite entertaining books by Doug Adams. My favorite was 'So long and thanks for all the fish', the 4th one.

It's been 25 years or so since they've been popular- but you can still get them.
