There are download sites where you can share music and videos. Does anyone know any good ones, heard about something called limewire? Are they safe for your pc?

Bittorrent is used for downloading torrents (the BitTorrent client enables a user to search for and download torrent files, the main window including a Search box, (aka Search for torrents), that allows a search term to be entered and which then opens the user's default web browser at the BitTorrent torrents search engine page with the results of the search.) see http://www.torrentspy.com. I suggest using uTorrent, available at www.utorrent.com. LimeWire is a peer-to-peer file sharing client for the Java Platform, which uses the Gnutella network to locate and transfer files. Limewire used to come with spyware and other malicious software, they have stopped this now so its possibly the safest software to use (as safe as p2p can get mind u..) Kazaa Media Desktop (once called as "KaZaA", but now usually left as "Kazaa") is a controversial peer-to-peer file sharing application using the FastTrack protocol. Kazaa is famous for it's alleged high number of computer viruses, trojans and worms. This is an example of why NOT to install kazaa.....

Malware installed by Kazaa includes the following:

* Cydoor (spyware): Collects information on the PC's surfing habits and passes it on to the company which created Cydoor.
* B3D (adware): An add-on which causes advertising popups if the PC accesses a website which triggers the B3D code.
* Altnet (adware): A distribution network for paid "gold" files.
* GAIN (spyware): Identifies your interests based on some of your computer usage and some of your web surfing behavior, including the URLs of Web pages viewed by you and other criteria. Versions of Kazaa released after 16 August 2005 do not have this.
* The Best Offers (adware): Tracks your browsing habits and internet usage to display advertisements similar to your interests.
* InstaFinder (hijacker): Redirects your URL typing errors to InstaFinder's web page instead of the standard search page.
* TopSearch (adware): Displays paid songs and media related to your search in Kazaa.
* RX Toolbar (spyware): The toolbar monitors all the sites you visit with Microsoft Internet Explorer and provides links to competitors' websites.

Personally i would use uTorrent, make sure u use a firewall and scan regularly for viruses and spyware (try Ad-aware, spybot destroyer, perhaps use peerguardian2 (available at www.phoenixlabs.org) whenever downloading. If your after a more specific song, or something u cant find on a torrent web site then install Limewire... Just remeber to be vigilant where security is concerned. If your in doubt use just uTorrent and read the FAQ on their website, http://www.utorrent.com/guides.php Limewire is not actually illegal, it is only illegal to download copyright material without paying for it. Ive used limewire on my home computer and my laptop, so far no problems for the laptop but the home comp. is slower, its a risk when you have limewire or something else but wont necessalry give you loads of viruses.

Limewire is horrible! My computer crashed because of it and pop-ups froze on the screen - ughh. It's also illegal :)

I've heard of a program called Ares

I would stick with iTunes though - even though you have to pay it's completley safe and legal

No P2P is really safe. Kazaa is one of the worst for viruses, followed by Limewire. Bittorrent is often better.
Only try these if you really trust your antivirus and firewall.
