Since it has warmed up i have been walking outside more. Can anyone tell me why my shins hurt so bad 5 minutes into walking? This never happened before.

It is shin splints and they can best be treated by stretching both the front of your shins and the calves. Stand on a ledge on the balls of your feet and let your heels drop below the level of where the balls of your feet are. Hold gently for about 10-15 seconds, then ever so slightly bend your knees just enough to where you feel it in your shins. Hold for 10-15 seconds. Do this regularly before and after your walk and your pain should dissipate soon.

You will only get shin splints if your are running (high impact). Shin splints can be serious and need equivalent care as a fracture.

However, I think you are just getting muscle soreness. The first few times I go jogging after a break, the fronts of my shins get really sore. You should actually be able to see a bit of definition forming on the muscles the cross in front of the shin bone.

For muscle soreness, the best thing is to ensure you are getting enough protein.

It's called shin splints & yup it hurts. Could be your shoes. You have to have shoes with good support to do any major walking/running. If you've got good shoes then see about a better insole. Something that will support your instep & cushion your heels. If this doesn't help you may need orthodics due to fallen arches, but try a good insole from a sports store or "Running Room" first.

Slow down until your shins get used to the walking then slowly build up in speed and length of time.

I had that problem too and was told it was shin splints. Tried drinking plenty of water before walking, during and after. Tried icing before and wrapping during and THE only thing that helped was to stop exercising until the pain subsided and start really slowing the next time I started.

Shin splints. Do you have flat feet? When I played football, I had bad shin splints. I had to tape my arches, that helped.
