I have a 1994 Ford Escort and I have begged my parents for a new car. I'm a freshman in college and I'm looking to take my car on campus next year for sophomore year and I don't want my nasty old Escort down there with a risk to break down on me. My dad's standing argument is "You already have a car and until that one breaks down you're going to drive it." They're thinking of getting my 16 year old sister a newer car and leave me to travel back and forth in my Escort. I need some certain ways to convince my parents to get me a car. I have a well-paying job so I asked my parents if they can at least pay half of it for me but they declined. Help!!! The car I'm looking at only costs about $6,000 used from a private dealer!!!!

make sure that it breaks down late at night and then call him to come get you.

On the whole, you sound like you have a case. BUT... things are not always that simple. Did you ever think that maybe your parents just don't have the money for your newer car? You have one. Your sister does not. They probably cannot afford to get you both something. Money does not grow on trees, not even for parents. There is no guaranteed way to convince your parents. They are not stupid. You are not going to be able to do a Jedi mind trick or anything. Make your argument as you stated here. If that doesn't work, then you are pretty much out of luck. The best thing you are going to be able to do is start saving your money and get it yourself.

There is one thing you COULD suggest: because you are going to college, perhaps they can get YOU a newer car, and your sister can have YOURS? If they don't buy that, I don't think you're going to pull it off. Good luck!

Firstl, you need to consider if your parents can afford the new car. Dont be greedy. Find out the trade in value on the old car. Go to them and show you've done your homework (not literally lol). Explain to them that you need a more reliable car. If they still wont budge then try getting the car yourself or ask them to co-sign on an auto loan. Your a big boy.

The guy above is a moron. Dont follow his advise. Youll just show your parents your immature and they wont buy you any car. Plus any mechanic with a brain will not do that to your car, its a liability.

Talk about the importance of the reliability of the new car. Also, talk about any safety features that are included. You could also see if the new car gets better gas millage. Do research on the new car to find that info. out. Really push the safety features. Also, set up a payment plan with your parents, and you can make a contract that you sign, to let them know you are serious about paying towards the car.

you just answered your own question. you can get a new car if your old one breaks down. do things to your car that will make it break down the fastest. you can start small by not warming it up. drive everywhere in excees speeds. but if you want it to break down quick. while driving put your slam the breaks and quickly put your car on park. If you think it's a little too risky then go to a mechanie and tell him to switch some of the parts for your car with parts they have on hand that can damage your car 200 miles time.

Tell them your sister can have your car, a 16 year old girl does not need a new car. She is just learning to drive. Or how about you buy your own car? You are in college you are an adult, grow up and buy your own stuff.

ask your parents to cosign on a lona for you. If you have been on the job for at least six months, have good grades, and haven't hurt your credit then you should be able to get the loan with a cosigner. Sell the Escort yourself. You will get more money for it than you will selling it to a dealer or trading it in.

Well just start driving it really hard for the next week or two and once it breaks down call your parents to come pick you up. Than start driving their car untill they finally gat fed-up and buy you a new one.

Well, you can do what I did. My dad gave me his crappy nissan pathfinder with about 160k and I hate it. He refused to buy me a sportbike untill the nissan broke. What did I do? got a job. I am a freshman in college and I work at a pizza place. If you want to spend 6k you can easily get a bank loan and pay for it yourself. I am sure your dad will admire you for working hard for what you want, and decide to help you get a car anyways.

make your car break car, maybe just leave your lights on for a while so your battery dies, then when your parents are going to have it checked to be repaired argue that they are going to be spending more money to fix the car then what its actually worth!!
