It's from a Sherlock Homes story, I think...and it means beware of or watch the woman...something like cherche la femme???

It's definitely "Cherchez la femme". It's a very common expression, meaning that there's a woman behind all this.

"Cherche la femme" is also ok, but that's not what you'd actually say. Even if you're only talking to one personne, you'd say "Cherchez la femme". It's a set phrase (is that English?)
