Previous owners painted around the fireplace but didn't seem to tape off the wood mantle and there is paint all around the edge of it. How can I remove it with damaging the beautiful stain on the mantle? Wasn't really noticeable until I repainted the fireplace with another color and now the white paint they used stands out and looks horrible. How can I accomplish this without damaging anything else?

When I moved into my house, I found paint on the wood floors after pulling up the carpeting. I was advised to used a product called MEK(Methyl Ethyl Ketone). You can buy it in a hardware store next to the paint thinner etc.... I applied it with a cotton ball and it worked! It removed the paint, but not the stain on the floors. (It is flammable so be very careful.)

What I would have done was run a nice bead of caulk first and then paint and that is as long as it isn't a huge mess. You could use a product called oops or maybe try a paint deglosser (what I use) on a rag with a putty knife, rub gently not to mess up your finish on your mantle but I really don't think it will. The paint has been on there for years and years?? My guess is if you can chip it off with your fingernail you might stand a chance, other than that what about just using steel wool carefully and if you have to restain the wood?

There is a product called oops. That is supposed to remove paint, but with it being so old, I don't know.

If it's an oil base stain then try "Paint and Brush Cleaner" first or, Mineral Spirits. Then go to soapy water.
