Carbohydrates are directly digested through your saliva in your mouth. It is considered quick energy, so burning it off quickly is smart. This is why you should eat some bread, or have a sand-witch before racing. This will let you get ready for the long run, and you wont get fat because you will be burning off the carbs. :)

Carbohydrates are your body's main source of energy, so your body burns it the most efficiently (as compared to calories from fats or proteins). Therefore, having a lot of carbs stored up allows you to sustain your endurance during a race.

Carbohydrates is food energy.
Sugar-high energy, sugar levels go way up and go crashing down.
Protein-stable and constant energy.
Carbs-high and consistent energy-long lasting. That is why if you eat carbs and sit on the couch, you can get fat by not burning them.

Your body will attempt to use carbohydrates stored in your system intially as it's energy source. If there are limited carbs than your body goes to fat/protein.

Carbohydrates increase your amount of energy as they are the primary source used by the body when available.
