I've found out that Sunnis do not share the Shi'a belief of Imamah (God has appointed specific leaders to lead and guide mankind) - what do they believe in opposition to this?

We dont believe in anything specific.

We believe that man is his own guide with proper knowledge of both the Quran and life sciences.

The whole imamah thing is the beginning of organised religion, and against Islam.

Basically there is no sect or group in islam !! islam was a unified religion for all ! But after the deathof Muhammad(pbuh) such things were intruduced in islam and now we can see many groups and Shiite Sunnis are the major ones....The actual islam is following the quran and Sunnah...thats it ! when we are given a complete code of life who to make ourselves confused by such things? This is my believe !

Lorna it is so simple.
The last Imam ( leader) chosen by God is prophet Mohammad. After him, his successors were chosen by people's elections or voting till Ali ( he's the last one to be elected)
That is: there is no chosen by God imam, But muslims should choose their imam who is not a spiritual symbol for them but rather a leader. This Imam/leader is supposed to be a man of intellect both religiously and practically. the notion of Imam changes by the changes of time and place. and he's rersponsible to take care of the nation's affairs.
you see, he's supposed to be like any elected president, prime minister..,etc of today's notions.
thanks for asking any way

After The prophet (Peace be upon him), Imperfect people had to take charge of the Islamic nation, and after his death, the revelation (Wahi) has been closed, God appointed no one after him, but we were left with The Qur'an and Hadith (Sunnah).

Hmm...perhaps Them vs Them is as Law vs Law.
(them who "oppose themselves": 2Timothy 2:25)
Perhaps phrase Hatfields vs McCoys rings a bell?
But don't McCoys also feud among themselves?
Do Under-Takers get along? Lawyers? Ministers?
Pst - most Politicians are also called Ministers.
Nothing but contention among "carnal" people?

Howbeit afterward of natural/spiritual? Spiritual.
But what if law natural and spiritual. Perversion!

Us-ward? Perhaps it's neither of Them vs Them.
Thou shalt not kill...killing one another? Law Law!
http://www.godshew.org/Usward.htm

Perhaps His Grace is neither of such Law Law;
If "the second is like unto the first" in Mt 22,
and the first is sin and death in Rom 8.

Pst - the Legally Blonde II movie Oneliner?
You're Miss-Taken if you think Law is right.

Perhaps law is left, grace is right, of law/grace
Perhaps law before, grace after, of before/after.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.
