you can give yourself a massage...........
firstly have a warm bath, or stretch the muscles by tilting your head slowly to the right, left, forward and backwards to open up the fibres of the muscle then gently squeeze the muscles on the right shoulder with your left hand and vice versa. Be gentle to start with, deeper harder strokes can be done once the muscle is really warm. Finish off gain by stretching and relax in the warm to cool down slowly.

Try these simple yoga exercises. They can help relieve stiffness and tension, and help strengthen the neck and shoulders against injury. They do work because I've just tried them! However, be careful when working with your neck and shoulders. Move slowly and deliberately. Pay attention to which muscles are being used. Never go beyond your edge of comfort. It also helps to have some pleasant and relaxing music playing whilst you do the exercises.
1. Chin-to-chest. Inhale and as you exhale slowly lower your chin to your chest, creating a long, gentle stretch along the back of the neck. Take several slow, deep breaths with the chin down. Liftthe head back up on an inhale. Repeat.
2. Ear-to-shoulder. Inhale and then as you exhale slowly lower your right ear toward your right shoulder. It won't reach, but don't worry about it. Breathe into the gentle stretch created along the top of the left shoulder and left side of the neck. Take several slow deep breaths. Inhale and raise your head back up. Repeat on the other side.
3. Neck roll. Follow the instructions for ear-to-shoulder, then roll the chin down toward the chest, across the chest and up the other side. Inhale and as you exhale roll the chin down across the chest and up the other side.
4. Shoulders-to-ears. Inhale and raise your shoulders up to your ears, pulling them up as high as they'll go. Then let go with an "ahhh" and drop your shoulders back down. Repeat several times.
5. Shoulder circles. Raise your shoulders up, rotate them back and down, forward and up again. Repeat several times then go in the opposite direction.
Then r e l a x !

Get a friend to massage your shoulders and neck - start off with light strokes and then gradually get them to work really quite hard into your muscles feeling for the "knots" - they actually feel like little hard lumps in the muscle tissue. Get them to stick a thumb in the middle of each knot and massage it. It will probably hurt but it will ease the tension afterwards. Nice warm baths are also good for easing muscle tension. I used to suffer with awful muscle tension and this was what my masseur told me to do in between visits.
I now do this for my partner and it does the trick.

Do you have anyone close to you who can rub an analgesic (Activ On, Ben Gay, Aspercreme) cream on your neck & shoulders nightly after a warm shower? That's the cheapest way to go. That is so relaxing & will allow you to sleep better too. I have the same problem & I am able to get a nightly neck & shoulder massage for free. :)

I have the same problem. I go to tai chi and body balance classes which eases them. Failing that a nice bath or shower does the trick. You could try neck rolls (drop your chin onto your chest and circle your head 3 times to the left and 3 to the right) or other exercises to loosen up the muscles. Also look into what causes it. Are you sitting properly at work etc? Hope these help!

You can check out if your local college does a course for massage, etc. You should be able to go along as a "practice" person for a very low price.

Try using a "wheat bag" on your neck and shoulders, the type that has wheat and lavender inside, you put it in microwave for a little while and it heats up, that is really relaxing!
