I have a 10 week old puppy that just suddenly became very ill. She is very lethargic and glassy eyed. She was doing just fine last night. Now she can hardly walk and she is vomiting and defecating a milky, mucous like substance that has small streaks of blood in it. She won't eat but she is still drinking. I can't afford to take her to the vet right now. All the vets around here what the money up front. Any suggestions? I have her seperated from her litter mates and my other pets right now. Is this a good idea.

For those of you who were kind with your suggestions thank you for your advice and support. My puppy is doing great now. She had ingested a small toy of my daughters and once she passed it she is doing much better. For those others who automatically assumed that I was an irresponsible dog owner I hope that someday when you are down on your luck and an emergency pops up with your pet that somebody like you doens't try to make you feel horrible. You automatically assumed that my pet was not vaccinated and that I was irresponsible in having pets because I didn't have $1000.00 dollars right that moment to take her into my vet. I am recovering from very recent open heart surgery. So basically what you are suggesting is because of emergent medical condition I should automatically give up my family pets which are part of my family. I am absolutely appalled that there are "pet lovers" out there who can behave in this manner!!!

It is probably some kind of internal parasite. You really need to take this pup to the vets right now or you could loose it. Don't assume the other pups are ok.
Make some kind of payment plan with your vet, but get that pup into have it seen.

Bren, Isn't it sad how some people just fail to get it? I am very happy to hear that you were able to resolve the problem. I am very unhappy that some answered like they did. I would bet that most of the "stupid" answers are teenagers with no perspective in life. I have seen vet bills soar into the thousands in my own life and some times you just don't have it. I surrendered my daughter's pregnant pony to the vet because I did not have any more money - she kept colicking over and over and I simply was drained financially. Thank God he was nice enough to let us visit her and the baby but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do and it isn't always easy. I had a metal valve put in my heart last year and I know the strain of open heart surgery. This will be ok and Those people can just think what they want--relax and don't let some ignorant person upset you - good luck -k-

I'm glad to hear that your dog passed the toy. I own a Weimaraner and she has eaten stuff that I never thought she'd touch (sanders, vhs tapes etc) thank God never gotten harmed from any of it. It's scary and a lot of people out there no matter how much they love their pet are hard pressed to pay out $200-$300 for a vet visit let alone $1,000.00 for surgery. I carry pet insurance for such an emergency, however, you still have to pay the money up front, and it's not easy for everyone.

Good luck with your puppy.

First she could have eaten poisoned dog food. You can buy insurance for dogs get her insurance and most of the time you can get medicare for dogs too. So get some take her to the nearest vet.Make a list of the last things shes eaten over the previous week.Change her diet completely don't let her have table scraps or treats just food and water try wet dog food and twice everyday give She could also have stomach ulcers. It might also be best to feed her cat food the wet kind because its wetter than wet dog food. Her poop will be runny if you feed her this and it will give off a most unpleasant odor but it might help to settle her stomach.

I work in an animal shelter and have seen Parvo too many times. It sounds like that. You HAVE to take her and all of the rest of your dogs in your house to the vet and get them all snap-tested for the Parvo virus. It is deadly and extremely contagious. It is passed through the feces and soap and water alone will not kill it. It lives for years in soil and a dog can catch it from the dirt in their yard. I don't want to scare you or sound so negative, but Parvo is dangerous and if you treat your dogs, as opposed to having them euthanized, you need to do it NOW. Pups with Parvo die from dehydration and organ failure. It is a horrible and painful way to die. So do the responsible thing and get them to a vet now. Call the vet ahead of time and tell him you suspect Parvo. She will instruct you from there. Good luck.

I really hate to say this, but this sounds like what my first puppy had. He died after two days of falling ill like this. I went to the Vet and unfortunately, he chalked it up to just being an upset tummy and sent us home where my pup died two days later. This is definitely Vet territory at this point. I hope all turns out well. I never did find out what was wrong with him, I only had him a week (Parvo was ruled out based on his symptoms - no foul smelling diarrhea and no blood until the very end).

I had the same exact symptoms today with my pup that I purchased 3 days ago, took him to the vet and it was parvo. I went back to the breeder and told them and they said the same thing as you, that they don't have the money to take the rest of the litter to the vet. They said they aren't sick and are going to try to sell them rather than let me take them and get them help. Unbelievable. Call your local humane society and ask if they work with a rescue that can help and start calling rescues yourself. If you don't, your pup is going to die if it's not dead already from dehydration.

If she won't eat but drinks, and is vomiting and has a weird poop... And you can't afford to take her to the vet to help her out... It might be a good idea to give her up to someone who would care for her. She is going to get weak and will get worse and then you know the outcome after that...

With the recall of the dog food that is happening, you have to get your dog to the vet right away. Your vet might be understanding for something like this.

It sounds like parvo that is a disease that puppy's sometimes can get you should get a parvo shot right away. And it so bad 7out of 10 survive it.And separating her was a great idea. I would bleach everything that the dog touches so the other animals don't get it.

Why would you get a puppy if you can't even afford it already!!! Be responsible. This is a very serious condition and you need to get to the vet immediately. You need to get all the other pets out of your house.
