Anyone know of a good brandy to use for cooking? I plan on using about (1/4 cup) of brandy for a steak sauce.
What name and brand? Thanks

A basic rule of thumb is when cooking with alcohol, cook with something you consider good enough to drink. It doesn't have to be expensive, but some cheap liquors are just that, cheap liquor. E&J has a few less expensive brandies that you can use as well as Germain Robin V.S.O.P. If you don't drink brandy or cook with it often, you can get a smaller bottle of it...usually kept behind the cashier counter of most liquor stores.

Cooking wine is not fit for anything. It is made with bad wine that has salt added to it so it will not be good to drink, If some product was labeled cooking brandy I would suspect it would be equally dreadful. But you should be encouraged to be expressive in your cooking, and nothing is quite as impressive as a flambe. Talk to your parents, ask them to buy you a small bottle of cognac, (that is a type of good French brandy) to use strictly for cooking. Promise you will not drink it, and the flame will burn off all the alcohol. (most anyway) And make something special for them and their friends.

I just tried this stuff at a food festival called Rave Review Culinary Brandy. They make their brandy just for cooking but you can drink it too. Its supposed to stand up to much higher temperatures than most brandies and its only $10 per bottle (its a small bottle but since I only want it for cooking, so that's just fine).

Any Brandy is fine for cooking. E&J Gallo should be none too expensive but has a good flavor. Remember the alcohol burns off.
