That depends on what state you're in and what type of traffic ticket you're speaking of. In NY, if you were to pay your traffic ticket (let's say a parking ticket) - then you you would have to pay the fine + a late fee and that would be the end of it. Unless you're in Nassau County, where they actually suspend people's drivers licenses for not paying parking tickets.
If it's a moving violation, then your license would have been suspended at midnight of the 15th day after getting the ticket.
You would have to pay the ticket and a license restoration fee.(to lift the suspension for "Failure to Answer A Summons".

Usually a bench warrant is issued for your arrest, so if you get pulled over it's off to the pokey with you.
If you go and pay the fine I think there may be additional court costs added to the fine, but you won't be arrested for it.

You have a one week grace period after that, you have a late penalty, and what is called a "Failure to Appear".
