You could ask any Vet and they will tell you that a Chow is not really a good dog to have around small children. I guess if you are not going to have kids around you they would be a good dog, but you always have that responsibility to make sure your dog will not bite anyone else. If you were to get a chow, I would get a puppy to train it right. Chows can be really good dogs and loyal, if brought up in the right way. Good Luck:)

I had two chows growing up as a kid. They were both friendly and loyal to the family members all 5 of us. but they were weary of strangers. They would fight with any other dog or any person who came near them and made them feel threatened. They can be very temperamental and can be aggressive. You have the possiblity of training them to be good, but sometimes chows are just aggressive no matter what. If you are looking for a chow to only be by you be aware that anyone else living in your household may still be part of your dogs family and will still show them loyalty.
Chows can fight, but they dont always do so unless they are either 1) feeling threatened by someone or something
or 2) are trained to fight. which leads you back to 1.

Chows are really good dogs they get really bad raps the first thing you need to do is make sure you have a very well socializes pup one mistake people make is not to let them be around anyone that comes into the house. Chows are a one person dog but can be well trained just make sure that you are THE PACK LEADER with them. Also if you have 2 females they tend to fight. and part of the reason for muzzles for vet trips is their bad reputaion I breed chows for 13 years and always had a waiting list for my pups.

Chows are not very social and are a fairly aloof dog. They are one person type dogs and are not good around small children. They think that you were put on earth to serve them and their needs and they are not overly affectionate even with the owner.
They take a fiar amount of care and have some health issues so be careful where you purchase your pet.
They may not be the best choice if you have three other people livinging in the house with you. Dpeneds on what type living situation you are in. Like husband , wife and child might not be the best for a Chow. Maybe an older child but not a young one.

Careful what you wish for!!!
You want to be the one responsible and you will be. Just remember that you might need someone to walk and feed your new bestfriend when you are out of town or working late. If you do not socialize your dog properly early then nobody will be able to help you in this instance and you will be forced to board the dog when you are wanting to take the cruise vacation you are saving for or the skiing trip to Tahoe. Boarding is not cheap so keep that in mind.
Chows, like any dog, can be aggresive. It is dependant on how you raise and train them. If you will be living with 3 other people then the dog will form a relationship with them as well. Dogs are pack animals. They will view you and the other roomies as pack members along with all of the heiarchy that is involved. Pack leader and subordinates. Everyone has a place in the pack. The dog CANNOT be the pack leader. However in most families they are. This is not fair to the dog. All dogs are trainable and you can teach an old dog new tricks.
Dogs generally attach themselves to thier owner and everyone else is just a friend as long as you have socialized them properly. . That being said you do not want a dog that you have to put away when friends come over. Just remember that you are the pack leader and your dog will do what you want.

Chows are always a one person dog but they will pick the person. That doesn't mean they aren't a family dog. they will be. And yes, they can be aggressive, they are protectors. Some of the traits can be trained out of them but they are the way they are..do research.Learn all you can before you buy. And think about all that hair that will need alot of brushing.

you know what it completly depends on the dog not the breed, we had chows all my child hood and so on and not one was mean or aggresive, in fact one of the dogs spent alot of time at school with me. we had people in and out ofthe house as there were 5 teenagers, and the two adults and we always had company either family or friends and the dogs were great with them, i have never seen a mean chow chow even while working at the shelter, everyone likes to give an opinion on them even though they have never owned one.

Chow-chows are cool looking dogs, but I wouldn't recommend having one when there are multiple people in house. They stick to one owner and don't like othes. My family had a chow when I was little and we put him to sleep after he bit my dad--he was only used to my mom and considered her to be his owner.
