I would check hotels.com... Los Angeles is a pretty big place to be visiting. Are you looking near the beach, airport, or Hollywood? There are definitely 'affordable' motels if you're not looking for luxury. Best Westerns Holiday Inns and Days Inns are scattered throughout. Would you be renting a car or depending on public transportation? I lived in West Los Angeles (Beverly Hills, UCLA, and Venice Beach was a 20 minute drive away), for 3 years and got to know the public transportation system rather well. There are some pretty cheap motels in Santa Monica, Culver City and Mar Vista, on a bus line. Remember, the closer you are to the beach or tourist destinations, the more you're going to pay.

"The Farmers Daughter" is supposed to have cute, affordable rooms. I'm not sure where you're exactly wanting to stay in Los Angeles (beach, downtown, Hollywood, valley,) or I could be more specific.
