The man was a genius. His "Supper at Emmaus" is one of my favourite paintings of all time.

Caravaggio's strong light/dark contrasts, clear and dynamic composition, and violation of the separation of subject/viewer make his paintings works of genius.
He is probably the best of the Baroque painters, and arguably on a par with the masters of the high Renaissance...although I feel he passes them on his ability to create truly dramatic works.

I really enjoy his work, and his bio is just as fascinating, but the previous answerer gave the reason why far far better than I ever could...he got my thumbs-up too.
