I have just recently started scanning documents wirelessly into my computer for editing, cropping, and other modifications before placing them into other sites, e.g. Family Tree Maker, and to the web into web based programs. However, when I scan the image, I never know where the picture is going. I need a simple program that will accept the images directly from the scanner, allow simple editing, and then export the modified image in various forms, e.g. JPEG, TXT, and other formats (with a choice of formats, if possible. ("Paint" does not do it; its images are so large in size, even at the smallest size (100%) that they cannot be worked on.) Does such a program exist? (Maybe I have it and don't know it.) Any other tips regarding what I want to do would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I got the perfect program. Its called FastStone Screen Capture. It will do everything you want and a lot more. I have the best version and its no longer available at the web site anymore. Contact me to setup IM, its too large to mail. I have shared it with a couple of people from here already.

Most scanners come with a basic photo editing program on the installation CD - HP has one of the most comprehensive software packages, and Brother has a decent version of PaperPort that comes with the install CD for the scanner.

Other than that, there aren't too many free image editing programs available to install. Picasa from Google is pretty good, but I don't think you will be able to configure your scanner to send scanned images directly to it. At best, you can scan a bunch at a time, them launch Picasa and process a bunch at a time.

Photoshop is great, but probably overkill for your purposes and price right now. Photo Elements would do the trick as well.

You should also check any disks that you might have from a digital camera. A lot of times those have a photo editing application with them. All you need to do is configure your scanner to send scanned images to that program.

Hope this helps!!!
