I guess I need to know what it looks like from the inside out and then sew it...? I don't know.

This sounds like a strange project. Do you actually need to make the mattress, or is it about building a frame for an inflatable mattress?

I would probably start with one of those cheap pool float/lounges--the inflatable kind. Inflate it, then, using a pair of shears or a utility knife, cut it open on the two short sides and down one long side, so you can see how it all goes together.

Also check HGTV.com--I'm sure someone on one of the "design on the cheap" shows has done this project.

if you're good at sewing, maybe make a shell that will receive 4 recycled inner tubes or 2 & throw a semi rigid pad on top
i don't think it's feasable to sew an air tight bed.
