A bark collar that uses shock is just that, it emits a small shock to the dog.
One that uses stimulation will beep or shake each time the dog barks.
Either option works, but the choice is up to the human. Many believe that electronic collars are cruel, but they are useful tools if used as a training aid and not a form of punishment.

We have a shock collar for our dog (she's a bird dog and definately needed it for training). We bought it from Cabela's and not only does it have different shock levels, but it also has a "tone" button which emits a high noise that humans can barely hear, but is a quick attention grabber for dogs. If you go with a shock collar, use the tone button before you shock and then eventually you won't ever have to shock the dog, just tone it and it will know it is about to get shocked and stop. The bark collars I have seen spray the dogs in the face when they bark, I've heard they don't work.
As far as cruelty goes, my husband and I both tested the shock collars to the highest level on ourselves. They are shocking (as in startling) but nothing that would make your dog not love you anymore (or hurt them). There are videos that usually come with the shock collars that show you how to effectively use them and prevent misuse.

The collars will give the dog a mild shock when he barks. This is the same a a stimulation unless it is specificed that the collar will vibrate. Some have a vibration mode if you do not want to shock the dog.
The shock given is very mild and similar in nature to dragging ones feet on carpet and getting a static electric shock. It does not really hurt the dog but does get their attention right now and help to change their focus.

Shock collars do just that shock the dog. Ultra sonic collars emit a high pitched sound (it can be adjusted) so that every time the dog barks, the beeping noise starts for a second or so and eventually, the dog will connect the noise with barking and will not bark. I prefer these as they do not harm the dog by shocking it.

shock is just that, an electric shock. stimulation is a nice word for anything, could still be a shock collar, could be a ultrasonic collar, one that emits a loud noise that only the dog can hear, or could be one of the citronella release collars, releasing an unpleasant odor for the dog when he barks.

i'm no longer anti-marvel collar the two as i think of they have their place yet to apply one on a puppy is downright merciless. All i will declare is that if somebody used a marvel collar on ANY of my canines, even if it replace into my puppy or considered one of my adults, they may be in for a rude awakening as quickly as I found out. i'm seething with anger merely on the seen coming domicile to be sure somebody had used a marvel collar on considered one of my canines.
