In a newborn infant yellowish skin is called neonatal jaundice. This occurs when bile is absorbed by the baby's bloodstream during hemolysis. It is easily treatable and totally reversible.

Eating too many carrots, yams and similar produce or taking too much vitamin A in the form of beta carotene can cause an orangish-yellow tint to your skin that looks kind of like that lotion that gives you an instant tan.

The most common cause of yellowish skin is liver disease. This is called jaundice and is usually a bad sign. Some people have an inherited disorder called Gilbert's Syndrome that is usually benign, but every now and then their skin is slightly yellow. In full blown jaundice, even the conjunctiva or whites of the eyes become yellow. The only thing that can fix that is a liver transplant.

So now that I've scared you to death (sorry), go see a doctor and have it checked out. Good luck.
