I'm doing a wedding right now. We were going to do this, but found it expensive...I will share with you anyway. We have the round globe vases with the fluted top. We were going to put rocks and water and a fish in each one. I thought betas would be nice, but $$$. You can pick a fish that coordinates, like an angel fish or black molly. It's a living centerpiece. Place the vase on a square mirror and lay some small glass rocks on it, to bring out the affect. It's pretty, but my daughter said, "What if one dies, and people come to the table and see a fish floating?" At the end of the wedding, anyone who wants to can take a fish home. Also, if there's high ceilings at your reception place, a helium balloon tied to the neck of this vase, leaving the string about 6 ft long, and some curled string on it (on the way up), will really bring it out. Otherwise, the small low vases get lost and no one notices them.

I totally agree with you I was trying to come up with a unique centerpiece idea, but wound up settling for 14" hurricane shades that have colored rose petals stuffed at the bottom with a candle in the middle. See the bottom on this page to view what I'm talking about.

Oh you should do a winter wonderland theme....black white and platinum would work well with that. Pick tree branches off the trees (either now before they bloom or in fall after the leaves die) and "ice" them buy using glue and ice rocks (see www.save-on-crafts.com). Instead of flowers you can use fresh pine and/pine cones to center around them. Use a large pillar candle and a hurricane. That will really help save you money as well - way less expensive than flowers. Good luck.

well since its black, red, white and platinum i would maybe combine the colors and do like platinum holders and white candles in the middle with black lace underneath and roses surrounding the candles. that would look really pretty but thats just my idea.

also u could do like a black set of holders with goldish candles with a platinum lace underneath, and the roses surrounding.

See these square vases...

Take a big, white candle like the one below and put it in the center of the sqaure vase.

Fill the vase about half way up with black, smooth rocks you can get even at a dollar tree.... They are like the ones in the link below, but they are black and they are very very smooth.

Then you can even fill it with water to about an inch above the rocks and lay some pedals over the water just floating.

one unique centerpiece that i'd like to use in my wedding is to have a fish bowl with live fish in it. it's a good conversation piece, and it doubles as a favor that guests can take home with them. to match your colors, you can get black and white rocks at the bottom and black colored goldfish. then you can just spread rose petals around the bowl and add a few tealight candles.
