I know the Nikon D80 is easier to use than the Canon Rebel XTi but why does the Canon take better pictures? Also, I asked the salesman about the Canon and how people say its better than Nikon for sports photography or fast motion and he said it wasn't true. Is it? what does the Canon have that the Nikon doesn't and vice versa, what does the Nikon have that the Canon doesn't. Keep in mind when I say Nikon I am talking about the D80 and when I say Canon, I mean Rebel XTi.

yes CF cards can hold up to 128GB but can the cameras themselves actually support that? By then these cameras will be obsolete.

Do you think the Canon takes better pictures or did someone tell you that it did?
Seriously, by the time you get to this level of camera, YOU are the most important judge. They will both do what you are looking for (except for the lack of a spot meter on the XTi) and they will both do it well.
Go here:
http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/nikond80_samples/
Open another copy of Internet Explorer and go here:
http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/canoneos400d_samples/
Flip back and forth while looking at similar photos - dark for dark and bright for bright, etc. Note that you can go below the full-screen sample and click on the file name to view a full-sized image for critical evaluation.
Kirr, I know that this is a lot of money for you (or anyone) to spend on a camera and you just want to make the "right" decision. I will continue to tell you that the decision you make WILL BE the right decision, even if you toss a coin at this point. If you are having such a hard time making up your mind, it just tells me that the two cameras are so close to each other for your needs that it almost does not make a difference which one you get. You buy one and then you defend your choice to the naysayers out there. I love Nikon, but I respect Canon. I am sure that there are others who feel the same only different, putting their loyalty with Canon. Once you are in one family or the other, you will learn so much about those cameras and you will behappy with your choice.
Hey... Why not rent one of each for a day or a week? I don't know about costs, but you can probably do this in any major city or even by mail or on-line. Shoot your own samples and see what you think. This might be what you need to really make up your mind, but then you will KNOW you chose the right one for you. (Too bad they don't use the same type of memory card, but maybe you have one of each already...)
Now I'm curious... How old are you?

If you go with slr a camera, you need to look further than just focus on Nikon D80 and Canon Rebel XTi because you probably change camera every less than 5 years. People, going with slr camera brand, usually base on the lens set.
I am not biased, but I am sure canon lenses is better than nikon lenses.

They are incredibly similarly spec'ed cameras. You'll find the Nikon to be a bit heavier and perhaps more rugged than the Canon. Image quality and performance wise there is hardly any significant difference.
here's a spec comparison
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos400d%2Cnikon_d80&show=all
The image quality perfomance is well compared on the web site links above and they are both truly outstanding and nearly identical. It's not true that one is better than the other for 'sports' photography... whatever that means. They both shoot 3 frames per second. I wouldn't think that because the canon can hold 27 in its buffer, vs 23 for the Nikon that it would make any difference. Who shoots continuous mode for that long?

The D80 is a few years old now, and is a "classic" Nikon camera in style of use, which you find easy to use. I had an acquaintance with a D80 who found it easy to use.
I do not know the Canon range of DSLRs so cannot comment on the XTi, except to say that Canon is another well-respected brand (along with Sony and Pentax). You would really need to shoot identical pics with the D80 and the XTi and view them side by side to see in what way anybody might consider one lot "better" than the other.
Indeed you need to check the cards which each camera will be able to handle. When the D80 first came out a card of 1Gb was considered large, so cameras of that age might not be able to use very large capacity cards.

both the nikon d80 and canon xti are great cameras...
in the right hands both would be able to take great pictures...
u must hav the skills to be able to produce this stunning images.
both canon and nikon hav their pro's and con's
canon is more focus on subjects tat are sports related...as in fast moving subjets..therefore they hav reali great af points...and af speed,
the nikon d80 and the canon xti are actualli two products tat are meant for different photography market...
the canon xti is meant for entry lvl dslr...while the d80 is for semi-pro photographers...both cameras are equally good.
the d80 cant be compare to the xti...
it is more likely tat the d80 is on par with the canon 30d.
the canon 30d however is a much better camera...
dont worry to much about wat camera to get...all of them are great...
just get the one tat feels good in ur hands and ur budget...

Are you using the auto program features? If so, you need to know that not all cameras are programmed to the same shutter speed, aperture opening, etc. for similar pre-programed operating modes. This has been the bane of many photographers the world over. Most likely the Cannon's pre-set programming just suits your shooting style more than the Nikon. You can of course get around that by using manual programming.

"Easier to use" is in the eye of the individual photographer. If the Nikon is easier for you to use, you won't go wrong if you go in that direction! (And this is coming from a Canon shooter!)

Just give up. You were straight-up with him when you first met and he still tried to bust down your gates with a battering ram. Once he didnt like the answer you gave him he went into temporary exile and didnt even apologize or consider your feelings. If he reacted like this as a 'friend' then how would he act in a relationship? If he wants action one night and you're not up to it he may go out looking for somebody else to satisfy his needs. He will then probably go on to blame you for not giving it up when HE wanted it. Dont convince somebody to date you. Whats your goal? Somebody should want to date you as badly as you'd like to date them otherwise it wont work.
