It means that your dog is registered with the American Kennel Club. The dog is the offspring of two registered parents and qualifies under this condition (along with a parental pedigree tracking lineage).

There are some benefits to being registered: stud fees can be increased, offspring are worth more with pedigreed and registered parents, etc.

There is no AKC "certified" it is correctly called AKC registered. It means that the dog has a traceable pedigree through AKC (American Kennel Club) for many generations. That the parents, etc are purebreds in a particular breed. It means the dog came from an AKC registered litter.

Here is a link to a sample AKC Certified Pedigree. Being registered with the American Kennel Club is absolutely not a sign of a quality dog in many people's opinion. Often breeders of dogs not yet recognized by the AKC will fight having their breed included in the registry as the effects on the breed are often devastating. Particularly breeders of working dogs do not like the AKC as the AKC always includes conformation standards as part of the recognition of the breed. Also, as it is the most well known registry in the U.S. it raises the popularity of a breed and gives rise to puppy mills breeding indiscriminately and filling shelters with the "extras" that they can't sell.

I am not sure where you are seeing AKC certified or in what context.
AKC is a kennel club and dog registry service. The largest in the United States. Also the oldest and most recognised in the US.
They register puppys from litters that are bred from registered parents. Once you breed the female and she has the litter the breeder contacts AKC and registers the litter and is given slips on which the new owners will regestry the pup they buy.
It is only a registry service and in no way means you are getting a quality dog. Only that IF the breeder did not lie you know who the parents were. Some have DNA done on the dogs and then you would know for sure.

akc is the American Kennel Club. certified means they recognize the kind of dog as one of there breeds.Usually both parents and grandparents of the dog are the same breed ...so as to keep the traits of that breed( like ear length or weight and color) this in no way means you get a better pet. It only means Your pet will have genetic traits of there parents. If you want a particular type of dog you can get one by choosing one recognizes by the AKC

AKC Stands for "American Kennel Club" They have certain standards that have to be met to be considered AKC. Pure Breed Dogs are AKC Registered in most cases. and have extensive Bloodlines that can be traced back several generations or more.

Could you let us know where you're seeing this? as far as registration goes, there is no such thing as certification. A dog registered with AKC simply means they have a record of the pedigree of the dog and they know that the dog is a pure bred dog. It is not an indication of quality. If you're referring to some type of testing or performance evaluation, let us know specifically so we can help.
